Sunday Sun

Brie and Beatrice... BFF's
The girls enjoyed a break from being cooped up today. Though old man winter has returned with a vengeance and the ground is frozen over again, it was bright and sunny this afternoon.

So, Brie treated the hens to an extra long free range, and, thanks to the melted snow, they frolicked in their first dust bath in over two months. (Very useful in reducing parasites, such as lice, that make life for chickens rather unbearable.)

The hens stretched out their colorful plumage, flapped their wings vigorously and warmed their fluffy backsides in the sunshine. Aaaahhhh.

Ever Watchful, Isis
But, what the "girls" really loved most? Playing in the straw we laid for them on Friday. Oh, what fun it was to kick about and dig little (or big) holes in the dirt. They have made a mess of the pretty ground covering I so carefully arranged around and in their coop.

It's never a dull moment with these fine, feathered ladies, and especially for Brie, who happily poses with them during playtime. Lady Gaga, our Polish hen, is looking more outrageous than ever. I keep meaning to trim back that crazy bouffant so that she can see a bit better, but just don't have the gumption.
